Perfect day out from Paris. The bus was comfy, and our guide was a total Monet nerd (in a good way!). If you’re an art lover, DO NOT miss this. Try the raspberry tart in the village cafe after—delish.

Nice tour guide Laurence told us about Monet's life during the trip, and on the way back he gave us tips on sightseeing and shopping in Paris. The organization was excellent. The bus was comfortable. Monet's garden is magnificent, a feast for the eyes. The house and the water lily pond are also worth a visit. A half-day tour is enough, you can see everything in a 2-hour walk.

A living Impressionist painting

Monet meticulously designed his gardens to be a source of inspiration for his art. Walking through the gardens is like stepping right into one of his famous paintings, such as the Water Lilies series.

Two distinct garden styles

The gardens are divided into two main sections: the Clos Normand, a flower garden bursting with color and variety, and the Water Garden, a serene oasis featuring Monet's famous water lily pond and Japanese bridge.

The inspiration behind his iconic paintings

Many of Monet's most recognizable works were inspired by specific features from his gardens. You can see the exact bridge, water lilies, and flower arrangements he immortalized in his art.

Monet's artistic influences

The gardens were heavily influenced by Japanese art, which Monet was particularly fond of. Look for the curved bridge, bamboo forest, and water features that reflect this influence.

Explore Monet's home

Visiting Monet's house gives you a glimpse into his personal life and creative process. The house is decorated with colorful walls, Japanese prints, and flower arrangements, reflecting his love for both art and nature.

Things to know before booking your tickets

  • Half-day tours (approx. 5 hours) focus entirely on Giverny, giving you plenty of time to explore Monet’s flower-filled Clos Normand, tranquil Water Garden, and the artist’s beautifully preserved home. Full-day tours (9–11 hours) often combine Giverny with other iconic sites like Versailles or Auvers-sur-Oise, offering a broader cultural experience in one day.
  • All options include round-trip transportation from Paris. Your experience can vary depending on the format:
  • Self-guided tours let you explore Monet’s estate at your own pace, ideal if you want to linger longer in the gardens or revisit parts of the house.
  • Audio-guided tours include multilingual commentary, providing rich context about Monet’s life, his garden designs, and the paintings they inspired—while still allowing you to move freely.
  • Expert-guided tours are led by professional guides who bring the story of Monet, his work, and Giverny’s significance to life with in-depth insights, especially valuable in the gardens and surrounding areas.
  • Guided tours are not permitted inside Monet’s house due to space constraints, but you are free to explore the interiors at your own pace.
  • Many tours include skip-the-line entry, which can save significant time—especially in peak bloom season (April to July). This means more time enjoying the gardens, less time waiting outside.
  • Small group tours (8–15 people) offer a more intimate and interactive experience. These are a great choice if you value personal attention and time to ask questions.
  • The gardens are at their most vibrant in spring and summer, when the flowerbeds are in full bloom and the lily pond reflects Monet’s iconic views. These months are the busiest, so it’s best to book 2-3 weeks in advance to secure your preferred time slot.

Explore Monet's garden and house

Clos Normand

Monet’s formal flower garden, created in 1883

Located in front of the house, the Clos Normand is a one-hectare flower garden laid out in geometric patterns but planted densely with diverse species to create a natural, painterly effect. Monet personally designed the layout to control color harmonies and seasonal blooming.

  • Main features: Gravel paths, iron arches, flowerbeds planted with tulips, roses, poppies, nasturtiums, and irises.
  • Inspiration for artworks: The Artist’s Garden at Giverny and several seasonal studies.
  • Design approach: French formal garden structure with English garden-style planting.

The water garden

Added by Monet in the 1890s, influenced by Japanese garden design

Monet purchased a plot of marshy land across the road from the Clos Normand and diverted the Ru stream (a tributary of the Seine) to create a pond. He designed the Water Garden for calm reflection and fluid composition, using it extensively as a subject in his later paintings.

  • Key elements: Central pond with water lilies (nymphéas), Japanese Bridge, bamboo, weeping willows, azaleas.
  • Iconic artworks inspired here: Over 250 versions of Water Lilies, as well as The Japanese Bridge and Reflections of Clouds on the Water-Lily Pond.
  • Layout purpose: Created for visual exploration from multiple angles—like walking through a painting.

Monet's house

Primary residence from 1883 until his death in 1926

The house is a restored reflection of Monet’s personal style and daily life. It is two stories high and features colorful interiors that contrast with its soft pink exterior and green shutters.

  • Dining room: Bright yellow walls and furniture, showing Monet’s preference for strong interior color schemes.
  • Kitchen: Covered in blue Rouen tiles with copper utensils—functional and decorative.
  • Bedrooms and personal areas: Overlook the gardens; original layout retained.
  • Art collection: Over 200 Japanese woodblock prints (ukiyo-e), including works by Hokusai and Hiroshige, demonstrating Monet’s lifelong interest in Japanese aesthetics.

Monet's studio

Original painting studio before he expanded to a larger one nearby

Located next to the house, this space was used in the early years of Monet’s time at Giverny.

  • Lighting: Large windows designed to maximize natural light—critical to Impressionist technique.
  • Current use: Exhibition space with reproductions of Monet’s paintings, giving visitors context about his process and the direct link between garden and artwork.
  • Historical note: Later, Monet built a much larger studio on the property to accommodate his massive Water Lily canvases.
